Artist’s statement
My first series are QOO series. This name from Chinese or Japanese character空. This means sky or empty. For over ten years I am making ceramic works that were combined with metal. Though these works look like genuine metallic products, the main material is ceramics and only a few parts are real metals. I am wondering if I could eliminate the borderline of this earthenware and metal. My main works are modern arts, and at the same time they are crafts. I would like to erase the borderline between the modern art and craft work also.
I am making functional art pieces also. Many Japanese ceramic artists are making fine art piece and functional art pieces both. There is almost no border between arts and crafts in Japanese ceramic arts. Japanese craft is called "KOUGEI". KOUGEI is slightly different from Western craft. In the West, art is considered to be higher than craft. In Japan, KOUGEI and arts is the same, sometimes the KOUGEI is higher than art. Japanese contemporary ceramic art is growing from this KOUGEI.
I am trying approach to contemporary art from ceramic art. We as a potter, make vessels. I am making vessels for invisible or things without shapes and volume. For example, vessel for sounds, vessel for time, vessel for light or rays.
響器 HIBIKI is vessel for sounds. If make sound or say something into HIBIKI, You can hear echo from HIBIKI. You can talk to someone with a little voice between the two ends of HIBIKI also. I added concept as a communication between work and visitor.
輝器 KAGAYAKI is vessel of lights or rays. I made KAGAYAKI body by trancelusent clay. This clay has been developed at Industrial Research Center of Shiga Prefecture in 2009. I fired fluorescent material on KAGAYAKI inner. I illuminated it with ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is invisible light rays. I rebirth it to visible light rays in KAGAYAKI. I used electric power made from solar panel. I mean sunshine rebirth to Ultraviolet rays and finally it rebirth to visible light by my work. I made this work after 3.11 2011 FUKUSHIMA. I hope that the light made by this process purify the soul of the peoples for requiem.
景器 KAGEKI is vessel for a view. I made and install this concept work in Gimhae South Korea last year. I made 8 ceramic pieces and combine it by bolt and nut to circle shape. You can see beautiful view or landscape through my work. I will continue this concept. I hope will make and install works in over the world. I hope never changing beautiful and peaceful view or landscape that we can see through my works.
My work is a Contemporary art and also KOUGEI craft. I have tried to create artworks by the new ceramic technique or idea developed from the basic and traditional way of KOUGEI. I am challenging to create my works with the aim of the fusion of KOUGEI art and contemporary art. I hope to be an artist who will expand a new style or area with possibility of my pursuit for this fusion and will greatly contribute to the ceramic culture.
